Green Fashion

LA-based designer Deborah Lindquist has been a fixture on the green fashion scene since, well, before there was one. A grand dame of green, she was repurposing and recycling vintage items while some of her A list clientele - Gwen Stefani, Hilary Duff, Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton et al - were still in diapers. Lindquist's designs are as body conscious as they are ethically savvy. Part couture, part ready-to-wear and completely environmentally fabricated, her signature items include recycled cashmere sweaters, gorgeous yet edgy scarves, fingerless gloves and other accessories, as well as the exquisitely crafted green wedding dresses.

New York May Join Crackdown on Plastic Bags

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City may follow an international trend and crack down on plastic shopping bags, seeking to cut their use with a plan officials hope will be a model for other cities. A proposal introduced on Monday requires stores larger than 5,000 square feet to set up an in-store recycling program and sell reusable bags.

Some 700 food stores plus large retailers such as Target and Home Depot would have to collect used bags and provide a system for turning them over to a manufacturer or to third-party recycling firms. Stores would be required to use bags printed with a reminder to consumers: "Please return this bag to a participating store for recycling." Environmentalists have targeted plastic bags as a scourge that take years to biodegrade and contaminate soil and water.

Green And Still Chic

By Sarah Childress (Newsweek)

Here's a peek into your closet of the future. That sleek bodysuit? Woven from bamboo threads. The orange sheath? Corn fiber. The sequins on that red bolero jacket? Recycled Coke cans. All of these one-of-a-kind creations made their debut during the recent New York Fashion Week, where designers like Oscar de la Renta and Diane von Furstenberg demonstrated their newly green cred in a show of environmentally friendly fashion. Expect more styles like them at a store near you very soon. This week, Bono and his wife, longtime anti-nuke activist Ali Hewson, will launch their own ecofashion line, Edun (nude spelled backwards), which is produced in family-run factories in Africa and South America, not sweatshops. They'll join designers like Katharine Hamnett in Britain and Los Angeles-based Linda Loudermilk…

Is Eco-Fashion An Oxymoron?

If you've picked up a fashion magazine in the past six months, especially around Earth Day, it's clear that "green is the new black" in the world of fashion. Eco-fashion is hot, and growing fast. But what exactly is eco-fashion?

Let's break it down. "Fashions" are a mode of personal expression, changes in which tend to outpace the changes of the culture of which they are a part. Fashion can be viewed as an art form. Something that allows people to express their personal aesthetics and notions of beauty, and ultimately…

Buy Recycled

You can't tell by looking at plastic whether it's the reincarnation of a Tide jug, but some brands that use postconsumer recycled (PCR) materials say so on the packaging. Aveda leads the eco-packaging pack: All materials are at least 80 percent PCR and some, like the bottle containing Aveda Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss ($23; Aveda.com), is made of 100 percent PCR plastic. The handles of the Recycline Preserve Toothbrush, $3, and Razor, $7 (Recycline.com), are made of 100-percent-recycled plastic, much of it from Stonyfield Farm yogurt cups.
